YOU would think Nigel Barter would want to do something relaxing with his time away from his duties tackling crime on Bewdley's streets.

But instead of putting his feet up, the town's beat manager is using his annual leave to race up the M6 to Manchester and the Commonwealth Games. PC Nigel Barter at Bewdley Police Station in training for his Commonwealth Games duties.

The 46-year-old sports nut has taken a position as an event services leader at the G-Mex, where he will oversee five or six other volunteer organisers.

The venue will host events such as gymnastics, wrestling and weightlifting in the games, which open today.

He first became interested in taking part two years ago and was successfully interviewed last year. He has since undergone training for his demanding new role.

PC Barter said: "I'm a sportsman in spirit.

"I'm not fit enough to actually do it but this seemed a good way of being involved."
