THERE are times when I'm embarrassed to be a native of these isles.

A new idea has been announced with great fanfare - affordable housing for teachers and police. It seems like yesterday that affordable houses i.e. council houses and police houses were dotted about our towns and villages.

Police were living in the community and didn't need to be called community police or beat officers.

Crime was low and response times dramatic and youngsters thought twice before causing mayhem in their locality.

Teachers and everyone else starting out on life could live among their peers and learn a little about life before moving out to buy their own houses, thus freeing up affordable houses for those just joining life's ladder.

Being old Labour, yet no so old, I knew that we would rue the Thatcherite decision to sell off the council houses but now we call them affordable housing. What nonsense.
