Newland v Cutnall Green

Two heavy showers condemned this match to abandonment but not before Newland had enjoyed another fine batting display, in particular a superb century from groundsman Chris Genever.

Newland elected to bat first and their openers enjoyed the conditions. Steve Freeman continued his fine recent form and Chris Genever rediscovered his. The pair had taken the score to 104 at drinks after 24 overs.

Genever took all of the strike for the next five overs and went past 50 and beyond as Cutnall shuffled their bowlers. Freeman got in on the act and he reached his fifth league half century of the season. Freeman went on to make a shot a ball and when the score had reached 164 in the 34th over he unluckily saw the ball ricochet from bat to pad and then wicket as he departed for an excellent 68.

Phil Birch was quickly into his stride as Baylis and Evans saw the ball disappear to all parts. Genever reached three figures with consecutive boundaries but on 204 Birch was caught on the boundary for a rapid 20 giving Baylis figures of 2-75 off ten overs.

White blasted away for 11 but Chris Genever stroked the ball to all parts to see his side reach the magical 250 and he remained unbeaten on 134 not out in what was a magnificent innings.

Tea was taken as the rain came and an hour delay meant that Cutnall were never going receive the maximum number of overs.

When play resumed Cutnall had 26 overs in which to reach the target or score 147 to secure a winning draw.

The prolific Neil Fletcher (41 no) was intent on going for the maximum and set about the pace of Churchill with relish punctuating the onside with some mighty blows.

Dave Rouse removed Higgins but Neil Evans (32 no) came to bat with a mission. The score had reached 74-1 when the rain returned and this time play was abandoned with the match evenly poised.
