I REFER to your article (Malvern Gazette, July 19) about the retirement of Mr David Fawbert, headteacher at The Chase.

In the story he says: "I came into a school that was really down at heel." As a former senior education officer with the county and a parent of pupils at the school, I know this to be untrue.

The buildings may have been shabby in parts and, compared with today, the range of resources was poorer, due mainly to national government parsimony, but the school's achievements belie such a comment.

Knowing Mr Fawbert as a former colleague, I am sure he would not wish such an impression to remain uncorrected, even perceived as unfair comment upon his distinguished predecessor, and staff and pupils at the time.

Our appreciation of Mr Fawbert's worthy achievements need not rest upon such an impression.
