Worcester Stirling Triathlon Club member Jemima Twist has been selected for the Great Britain youth team for the European Championship in Graz, Austria tomorrow.

In the Rivington Super Sprint qualifying race in Lancashire she finished third overall, a great achievement considering her training is restricted due to school studies.

She also won a run/bike/duathlon race organised by the Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain, which qualified her to compete at the World Championship which takes place in September in Sardinia.

At school level she recently won the Worcestershire 1500 metres title.

Les Bailey is set to compete in the World Duathlon Championships in Georgia, United States in October after winning his age group at the Margam Park Duathlon in Port Talbot, Wales, which acted as a selection race and attracted a good field.

Bailey, who had just returned from the European Championships in Hungary, won the over 60 years category in 2.17.11. The winner was top international Martin Yelling in 1.46.22.

The 10km off-road run and seven-lap bike section totalling 36km, followed by a 5km off-road run, was tough, hilly and very technical in places on a very hot day.

The Bournemouth Triathlon, held over the Olympic distance of a 1500m sea swim, 40km bike and a 10km run was held in wet and windy conditions making the sea swim difficult.

Over 800 competed due to it being a world championship qualifier for the British age group teams.

Club member Johnny Stephens had an excellent race finishing 11th in his 30-34 years category and 38th overall.

Kevin May despite finding the swim very difficult finished 53rd in the same age group and 198th overall in a time of 2.18.28.

The overall winner was Daniel Corner (Arctic Triathlon Club) in 1.54.44.

The Hereford Sprint Triathlon was held on a hot and still day which made for good race conditions. It consisted of a 400-yard open pool swim, 16km bike and a 5km run, with 180 competitors.

Kevin May had a tremendous race to take second place overall, just reward for his hard training in recent months.

His time of 51.38 was only just behind the winner Tony Dix (49.55).

Maureen Burrows (1.04.08) won the ladies' super veteran class, and Maggie Johnson-Myers (1.01.53) was third lady veteran.

Also competing: Neil Ashton 55.08 (16th); Ros Townsend-Hope 1.02.07 (64th); Mark Johnson 1.02.15 (66th); Karen Metcalf 1.03.37 (77th); Stephen Lewis 1.03.53 (79th); Sue Ellis 1.21.02 (159th).
