n WHILE Andrew Bryant (You Say, July 20) may be right in pointing out that Elvis Presley was a great performer, Elvis certainly contributed to the degradation of Western Civilisation.

Elvis' lyrics may have been relatively innocent (he even sang hymns) but his pelvic gestures and the overt sexuality of his crooning laid the groundwork for the indecency and immorality of Western culture in the last four decades.

The pop music that this spawned has only become more extreme - its chief themes undesirably being sex, drug experimentation and rebellion.

I enjoy listening to the more intelligent pop artists, but I believe the world would have been a better place if "rock and roll" had never happened.
