CLAY pigeon shooters will be aiming high when they help raise money for Cancer Research.

A special shoot is being organised by Barbara Williams, who has been drumming up funds for the charity since she lost her husband Andrew to a brain tumour two years ago.

So far, Mrs Williams has raised nearly £50,000 for the charity by organising various functions and participating in events such as quad bike racing, and walking the Great Wall of China.

She has set up the latest event to raise more money for the cause, and is hoping it will amass as much as £1,000.

The Saturday, August 31, shoot, which is now nearly full, is open to local groups by invitation only.

It is being held at Rodge Hill Farm, Hillside, Martley.

Each team will consist of five people with 50 clay birds per gun and 250 clays per team.

"It's a friendly, rural event," said Mrs Williams, of Coppice Hill End Bridge, Martley.

"The shoot is properly organised and people can't just turn up on the day.

"The fact that local shoots couldn't go out last year due to foot-and-mouth means this will be a good thing for these teams to be able to do.

"Rural events need to be kept alive because I think people have had such a raw deal."

The determined 51-year-old said she has had a good response to invitations sent out to various syndicates.

"I think so many people have got behind it because they realise that rural pursuits need to keep going," she said.

Mrs Williams, who has four daughters and three granddaughters, said trophy prizes would be given out.

She added that she planned to make the shoot an established annual event.

"We're going to have a challenge cup in memory of my late husband," she said.

A barbecue is also being held on the day and cartridges can be purchased at the farm.

The entry fee is £12 per gun and the event is being held from 1pm until dusk.
