TRIBUTES have been paid to a tireless Worcester charity worker who raised money for good causes for nearly 40 years.

Margaret Griffiths has died at the city's Newtown Hospital after a short illness, leaving two sons and two grandchildren.

Her funeral was due to be held at St John's Church at noon today, followed by cremation.

The 68-year-old spent 38 years working for four charities as a volunteer and fundraiser.

In 1964, she joined the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the Cancer Research Campaign.

A year later, she lent her support to The Friends of Worcester Royal Infirmary, and she joined the Women's Royal Voluntary Service in 1976.

Son Brian said his mother had been dedicated to the work and continued it right up to the time her illness struck. She found immense enjoyment in her voluntary activities.

"She would be working for four charities at any one moment in time, but at the end of the day she liked to become involved and mix with people," he said.

"She always supported the family and enjoyed helping others. I don't think she would have changed anything. She was very happy. I am sure she is going to be missed by a lot of people."

In 1981, Mrs Griffiths became chairman of the RNLI and received the institute's Gold Badge in 1999 for her years of service.

In 1997, she was handed a certificate of long service for 32 years of work with The Friends of Worcester Royal Infirmary. She was also awarded the Cancer Research Campaign's Silver Badge.

John Sanders, press officer for the RNLI, said the avid campaigner, of Columbia Drive, Lower Wick, had a superb sense of humour but was always professional when it came to her work.

"She was always there for others, no matter who they were," he said.

"She was also a very happy person and would not let anything stand in the way of making sure the job was done well.

''She always maintained that while we might be amateurs in fund-raising, we must always act in a professional manner."

The family has asked that no flowers be sent to the funeral today, but donations can be made to the RNLI by contacting E J Gumery & Son, Funeral Directors, Ombersley Road, Worcester, on 01905 22094.
