HEALTH chiefs are warning the county's pensioners to tighten their sandal straps to avoid accidents this summer.

South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust is warning ill-fitting sandals often cause the elderly to fall and injure themselves.

Rachel Dodson, health promotion co-ordinator for Worcester city, said sandals should be replaced regularly to avoid accidents.

"Many people are not aware sandals only last for two seasons and then lose their shape," she said.

"Older people should wear a strapped type with a thin sole - not a mule design - as they need the grip and the feeling for the pavement.

"Ill-fitting shoes are the cause of falls in the elderly, can ruin their holiday and maybe in some cases end up in hospital."

Foot care training courses for health professionals and carers are being run across the county over the next few months.

Anyone interested in attending should call 01684 612655.
