OH dear, my little letter seems to have ruffled some feathers!

I have to tell Mr Gilbert (Shuttle Times and News Letters, July 11) that my amusement in the debate to save old buildings stems from the defence of the indefensible.

He does not attempt to justify the retention of "Building 35, Warehouse, 5 Floors, 19,600 sq ft area" (as it appears on the works plan) or the Piano Building (as he and possibly passing pigeons know it) on the aesthetic, functional, or cost grounds which were the substance of my letter.

He apparently wishes to retain it as a political card to play against the developers. And as to bemoaning the failure of the developers or Brintons to donate land or buildings for cultural use, well, it's a tough old financial climate in the real world. This was surely an unrealistic hope.

As to the sturdiness or otherwise of this mill Mr Gilbert, I suspect one of us will be proved correct in the not too distant future - if the vandals haven't succeeded in burning it down in the meantime.
