THE officials of the Malvern RFC Youth Development Section were very pleased with the turnout for their Mini/Junior registration day at the club's Spring Lane HQ last Saturday, which officially kicked off the section's tenth anniversary season.

Nearly 100 youngsters signed on which is the highest number of children to register in one day since the section formed in 1991. Club officials are expecting another 55 minis and juniors who were away on holiday to sign up this weekend to take the total close to 150 members.

Gary Tolley, the chairman of Youth Rugby at Malvern RFC, was delighted with the response.

"The number of children who arrived at the club took us all by surprise, but we managed to get them registered very quickly so that they could chat to their squad coaches and managers and allow their parents to view the new facilities at Spring Lane," he said.

However, he pointed out that there is still plenty of space for players in all the age group squads, especially in the Under 10's, 11's and 12's. Here the squad coaches want to run two teams per age group to help the tag-rugby players from the local primary schools.

Children from six to 17 years old who want to give rugby a try are always welcome to call-in at Spring Lane on any Sunday morning from 10am to noon.

Training is fun and available to all standards from the experienced to complete beginners.

Matches are played on Sunday mornings, but children don't have to play if they don't want to.
