MORE than 60 jobs are set to go at a Worcester manufacturing company following the "reorganisation" of its operations.

Tower Manufacturing, which makes fastenings and fixings at its Navigation Road site, will lay 61 people off at the end of November.

The company had been considering the future of the remaining manufacturing operations since the recent sale of its forged products division.

After consultation with employee representatives, it has now announced that part of the manufacturing operation will be closed.

It concluded the investment required to increase production "cannot be justified on commercial grounds".

Some staff requested voluntary redundancy and the other employees affected will be helped to find new jobs, the company revealed.

In a meeting with representatives last month, Tower director Des Morgan said there would have to be "root and branch" surgery at the company.

"The need to be competitive in the markets we serve has led us to the conclusion that a full-scale manufacturing operation at the Tower Worcester site is not a viable proposition," said Mr Morgan.

"In our discussions with employee representatives, this point has been acknowledged and we are grateful for the forbearance of all our staff, many of whom have been associated with Tower for over 20 years."

Tower was established in Wales in 1894, before moving to Worcester in 1970.

The forged products division was sold to Floform in May by its owners, GET Group plc.

Floform said at the time that it intended to move the operation to Welshpool in Wales.

Mr Morgan said in order to remain competitive, the company would need to move production to other locations, including the Far East.

He said it would continue to sell its full range of cable clips and fixings, and develop its sales, marketing and distribution operation.
