A MALVERN artist's paper creations and the textile art of her Ledbury contemporary will sit side by side in a special exhibition in Hereford next week.

Sarah Walker and Angie Hughes, who studied together at Malvern Hills College, are collaborating with Hereford artist Kelly Gummerson for 'The Three Makers' exhibition at the Kemble Gallery from Tuesday, August 6 to Saturday, August 17.

All three are members of the Worcestershire Guild of Craftsmen and are promising visitors an unusual mix of textile, paper and ceramic pieces.

Sarah and Angie have exhibited together before but their work is very different. The former creates lampshades made from coarse plant paper imported from Thailand, using stitching and cutting to produce a stained glass effect.

Extremely popular, Sarah has even received a commission from Bahrain.

She also uses abstract images for framed wall hangings, which will also be displayed in Hereford. The show will include one of her favourite pieces, a framed triptych of three leaves.

She said: "The different approach of each artist will make the exhibition interesting for the public and the combination of pottery, lamps and contemporary textiles will be very striking when on display."

Angie Hughes uses the printed word as a basis for her textile art and is particularly inspired by her partner Mark Stevenson's poetry.

She said: "My response to the poetry is literal and very accessible for the viewer who can actually read the words on the pieces."

At the exhibition Angie will show a new piece, Babel, which she says is based on an Anne Stevenson poem which she describes as "a tower full of windows".
