HARNESS racers from across the country will be trotting out to raise funds for Acorns Children's Hospice Trust this Sunday.

More than 100 competitors are expected to jump in their landaus to race around the track in a field off the B4219, at Hanley Swan.

The event has been organised by Dave and Kath Shellam and Ivor and Pauline Stokle, from the Three Counties Harness Racing Club.

"We held the race for the first time last year and it was a very, very successful day," said Dave Shellam.

"In all, we raised £2,000 and are confident of doing even better this time.

"There are entries from all over the country and, as well as lots of great races to watch, there will be plenty going on for the whole family to enjoy."

Prize money of £250 awaits the winner of each heat with the final winner scooping £1,000.

Kath Shellam called for people throughout Worcestershire and Herefordshire to support the event.

"Let's hope for a bumper crowd. We want to raise enough between now and when the hospice is complete to do a whole room," she said.

"The new hospice is such a tremendous cause and this event is something lots of people can support."

As well as the 10 qualifying races and the final, there is also a children's race, with youngsters from eight taking up the reins.

The meeting will be officially opened at 1pm and racing begins at 1.30pm.

Food stalls, a licensed bar, bookmakers, produce and cake stalls, a bouncy castle and face painting will keep people entertained until the event ends at around 7pm.

Entry costs £5 per person, and includes a racecard and children under 14- get in free, but dogs will not be admitted.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the final race, or holding a stall, should contact Dave Shellam on 01905 830071.
