ONE of the last survivors of the Battle of Arnhem was given a military funeral at Upton on Tuesday.
Donald Sallis, of Malvern, died on Thursday, July 23, at the age of 78. He took part in the infamous Second World War battle in which thousands of British troops were killed during an attempt to storm bridges in the Dutch town in 1944.
Mr Sallis was a member of the South Staffordshire Regiment, part of the British First Airborne Division, and only survived the carnage thanks to a Dutch family who hid him from the Nazis.
He later became a long-distance lorry driver and settled in Malvern Link, where he lived for 44 years. He was married to Nancy, who died five years ago, and had one daughter, Anne Newell.
