THE Worcestershire Golf Club's scratch team approached their home game against Tolladine knowing that a convincing win was essential in order to maintain their challenge at the top of the Worcestershire Bowl Scratch League.

With every member of the team playing excellent golf, the team was equal to the challenge, chalking up yet another whitewash. The Worcestershire were outstanding and won the match by five games to nil.

The team, led by captain Nick Smith, saw outstanding performances from Mark Read who won his match six up with five to play and Graham Wallace, who won his match six and four.

Three other wins were recorded by Paul Yorke, three and two; Andy Dunster, five and four, and captain Nick Smith, two and one.

July has been a busy golfing month for the ladies section. In their club championship, played over 36 holes, and in difficult weather conditions the standard of golf was very good.

Cathy Harris, who returned scores of 79 and 84, ran out the winner by three clear shots. Second place saw the former county player, Ursula Pearson, return scores of 84 and 82. Diane Meakin was third with scores of 88 and 85.

Continuing her excellent form Cathy Harris ran away with the Silver Scratch Cup. Playing a quality of golf, beyond her wildest dreams, Cathy, who plays off a handicap of ten, returned a net score of 69. Cathy was six shots better than Ursula Pearson who, returning a net score of 75 off a handicap of nine came second. Third place went to Diane Meakin who returned a net score of 76.

In the Bronze Scratch Cup Corrine Mills, playing off a handicap of 24, returned a net score of 75 to obtain third place. Suzanne Hamilton, who came second, also scored a net 75 but Suzanne had a better back nine holes than Corrine. The winner of the Bronze Scratch Cup was Kate Cross who returned a net 74.

In the Extra Medal Competition Cathy Harris continued her winning ways. Cathy returned a net 69 winning Division One by three clear shots from Norma Pottinger who came second. Mary Horobin, a further two shots back, came third with a net score of 74.

Division Two saw a tie for first place until the usual count back system was applied. Placed in second place as a result of the count back was Zena Lloyd. Kate Cross won Division Two with Corrine Mills in third place.

In the 36 hole Eclectic Competition Jill Mico, now playing off a handicap of 26, returned an eclectic score of 66 to secure third place. Two scores of 64 were recorded by Kate Anderson and Kate Foster. The two Kates were separated on the count-back system. Kate Anderson won the competition with Kate Foster in second place.

In the Stan McCabe Trophy, played as a Better-Ball Stableford Competition, the standard of men's golf was of a high order. In first place returning the excellent score of 44 points Neil Smith and Andy Dunster, David Turner and Simon Long came second with 42 points and Jeremy Theakstone and Nick Smith came third.

In the men's Mid-week Medal Competition, Paul Yorke was in great form when he won Division One with a net 68. Former club captain Brian Evans returned a net 69 to come second and Dave Turner was third with a net 70.

Nigel Mills won Division Two with a net 68, with Alan Foster in second place and veteran Denver Davis in third.
