IT'S now known that John Prescott plans to introduce Regional Alliances, run from Brussels, to take over the local county or city councils that we now have.

However, it's interesting to see that with the recent move by the European Commission to harmonise tax duty on diesel fuel, Gordon Brown has suddenly had cold feet and declared that tax on diesel can only be decided by national not European rules.

This is because this issue will reduce income to the Treasury by many millions of pounds.

I would ask Messrs Blair, Prescott and Brown where they leading Britain. Is it into a central European government which lays down laws and tariffs for all members without question (except for tax on diesel) - or do we stay as members of a free trading Europe with our own democratically elected Government and county and city councils. I hope the answer is the latter.
