GOLDEN boy Simon Archer returned home yesterday and immediately set his sights on yet more glory.

The Worcester badminton ace travelled back to the Faithful City fresh from winning another gold for England in the Commonwealth Games.

Archer won two golds and a bronze at the Manchester extravaganza to add to his ever-growing collection of Olympic and Commonwealth medals. And the 29-year-old is already eyeing another haul as the countdown begins to the World Championships in Birmingham next year.

"I think I've got another two or three years left in me," he said.

"Obviously I'm targeting Athens in two years time and the Olympic Games, but there is also the small matter of the World Championships in Birmingham next year.

"I'm still enjoying the tournaments and as long as I am I will keep on with the training and competing. The only thing I find difficult now is the travelling, but when you play in a tournament such as Manchester, it is a fantastic experience."

Archer collected gold with his former Olympic bronze medallist partner Jo Goode at the weekend to add to the team gold and his men's doubles bronze won with James Anderson.

It was yet another glorious chapter in the amazing Archer story after starring on the world stage for the past 11 years.

"I think if anyone saw my reaction after winning the mixed doubles gold, they could see how much it meant to me," he added.

"It was a great experience and in front of the home crowd made it even more special. They gave me a big lift and made a difference. I started a bit slowly in the final but they really got behind us and willed us to win. It was a great buzz and certainly felt even better than Kuala Lumpur four years ago."

The treble medal haul was a personal success for Archer after battling back to fitness following a serious knee injury. And despite a heavy schedule of games, the former Worcester Sixth Form College student came through with flying colours.

"The knee is fine," he said. "I'm very pleased because there were a lot of games but it has stood up well. What I want to do now is build on this success and get back to full fitness because I still think I can improve even more."
