A SEASON of encouraging performances was finally rewarded for the Worcestershire Saints when they gained a first victory of the season, 20-12, in a play-off match against the Kingston Warriors.

With both sides evenly matched this was closely fought encounter, which either side could have won and it took two late tries from James Robson and Richard Jenkinson to clinch the victory.

The match started with the visitors applying the early pressure and they took the lead with a try on six minutes. The conversion attempt was missed and Worcester took full advantage when they took the lead four minutes later.

Richard Whitehouse waltz-ed through a static defence to score under the posts. Whitehouse easily converted to give the home team the lead.

The Saints only held the lead for five minutes before Kingston replied with a try by the corner flag.

Determined to regain the lead, Worcestershire applied the pressure for the next 15 minutes and only solid defending from the Warriors prevented the home team from taking the lead.

Lively

But Kingston were unable to prevent the lively Marcus Whyte crossed the line by the corner flag.

A difficult kick at goal was missed and with the half-time approaching, Worcester had a great chance to increase their advantage when Mark Smith ran 40 metres before being held up just over the try line.

Despite the Saints leading 10-8 at the interval they struggled to control the game from the restart.

But just as the Warriors looked the more likely of the teams to take the points, they threw the game away when Chris Thair, who had been their most creative player was sent off for kicking Manny Samra.

Even so the Warriors regained the lead with a try seven minutes later and with the Saints also reduced to 12 players when Dave Whitby was sent off.

The next try was always going to decide the match and it was Worcestershire who tooke the initiative when Robson crossed the line with 13 minutes remaining.

Four minutes later the Saints nerves were eased when a comedy of errors from the Kingston defence allowed Jenkinson to score an easy try. Whitehouse converted to give the home team victory.
