CHARGES for a currently free rubbish collection could be introduced by Redditch Council in an effort to make a £1 million saving.

The special collection service, which takes away items such as wardrobes, is one option being explored along with a controversial proposal to introduce car parking charges at the town hall for council staff.

But council Leader David Cartwright said more than £500,000 had already been saved through vacant posts, including jobs in the planning, administration and benefits departments, which had not been filled.

Mr Cartwright said officers had spent the last 12 months reviewing operations and exploring the option of transferring the management of one service to another organisation.
