PLANS to erect traffic lights at a notorious accident blackspot in Bromsgrove are under consideration.

Bromsgrove Highways Partnership wants to make the Kidderminster Road safer to cross for motorists travelling from Perryfields Road and Whitford Road.

It's proposing a £100,000 scheme to install four traffic lights at the crossroads.

Work could begin later this year.

Kidderminster Road residents are currently being consulted and the design is subject to a safety audit.

The Highways Partnership Forum has backed the scheme and the town's highway chief, Jon Fraser, expects the project to cost between £80,000 and £100,000.

Prowting Homes, which built an estate on the former Whitford Hall School site, has contributed £65,000 because its exclusive development has created further traffic on the busy stretch.

Mr Fraser added: "That area of the Kidderminster Road is a notorious accident blackspot and we have been considering action for some time.

"Other options included a mini-roundabout, but the road is too busy and a large roundabout would mean taking up people's gardens.

"We've had some feedback and many residents are pleased and relieved.

"Some concerns were raised and we will take those on board."

A worried Kidderminster Road householder contacted the Advertiser/Messenger to say he was concerned about standstill congestion outside his home of 35 years.

"I agree the road is dangerous but long queues of traffic could create accidents if people come whizzing from Kidderminster to find stationary vehicles," he said.

"An island would be better."

Bromsgrove district councillor, Alan Dent (Con - Whitford), said: "If it helps to resolve the accident rate at the spot and make it safer for cars crossing the road it must be a good thing."
