AMBULANCE bosses have revealed they managed to keep to stringent targets, despite a huge increase in calls during the World Cup and Jubilee celebrations.

Hereford and Worcester Ambulance Service NHS Trust says crews responded to 76.7 per cent of emergency calls within eight minutes throughout June.

Throughout the month, the service had to deal with a 14 per cent increase in calls from the same time a year before, and the number of calls doubled at certain times.

Many calls during the football festivities were for falls, car accidents and chest pains.

Steve McGuinness, director of operations for the trust, said if the high demand increased, a fall of standards was likely.

"All credit goes to those who worked within the control and operations environments, along with support services for helping us to achieve against the rise in activity," he said.
