A DAY off sick from school wasn't all bad for Matthew Lynch, from Bromsgrove, because it gave him the opportunity to create an award-winning balloon design.

While recovering, five-year-old Matthew, of Marlborough Avenue, decided to pass the hours away by entering Bromsgrove District Council's Street Theatre competition.

The authority wanted a design for balloons promoting the summer scheme which begins today.

Matthew who attends Ottilie Hild School, in Hanbury Road, Stoke Heath, created a smiling sun, which has now been emblazoned on the balloons being given to youngsters attending free Street Theatre events every Wednesday on the Recreation Ground during August.

Proud mum Caroline said: "Matthew created the design when he was sick one day and was very excited when he saw the balloon - and particularly his name - underneath his drawing." The fun starts at 10am and continues to 2.30pm.

Acrobats are performing today and next week a model of a 50ft long sperm whale is coming to town.
