M A CLARKE (You Say, July 31) has taken the loyalty and history of the Catholic Church completely out of context.

The church's loyalty is to Christ and not to Rome. To refer to it as Roman is a misnomer. Its title is Catholic Apostolic.

The Bishop of Rome, The Pope, inherited his seat from the first Bishop of Rome, who was St Peter who built the church there 2000 years ago.

We were all Catholic brethren until the 15th Century, when Martin Luther split the church and changed the rules, thereby founding the Protestant Church of whom our present Queen is the head.

The Catholic Church exists only to spread the word of God to the world as taught by Christ himself, to his apostles.

I believe that, there is some good in all religions and that it is offensive and wrong to make derogatory remarks about other people's faith.

Worcester.
