A FLOWER show organised by hard-up Bromsgrove Rovers at their Victoria Ground to help boost their dwindling finances fell victim to the storms and apparent apathy of exhibitors and the paying public. A boxing tournament at Whitsun, again to raise cash, had been washed out by the weather.

PARTS of Bromsgrove were blacked out on Wednesday when lightning struck overhead power cables. However, Droitwich was the worst hit with floods up to three feet deep in some streets. BBC programmes from the Wychbold transmitter were interrupted for 25 minutes at the height of the storm.

DROITWICH Chamber of Trade had organised a Shopping Week to help boost trade in the spa. It began with a children's fancy dress parade on Covercroft attended by the Mayor and Mayoress. Mr Johnson, the chamber's chairman, remarked on the transformation of Covercroft from that of a year ago when it resembled what he termed a "dump."

BROMSGROVE man Mr J Wilson, whose family lived in Quarry Lane, Hill Top, and who had moved to the Far East to live some 25 years ago was back in his home town for a short spell. As a correspondent with Reuter's News Agency he had helped keep the world informed about two world wars. Even as a small boy he had shown a keen interest in current affairs by tipping off the Messenger about local stories.
