A STOKE Heath hockey player is celebrating after returning from the Commonwealth Games with a silver medal.

Jennie Bimson, of Ploughman's Walk, was part of the England Ladies Hockey team who lost 3-2 on the golden goal rule to India in last Saturday's final.

She said: "I am delighted. But we were going for gold. Four years ago we got silver and were aiming to go one better."

The 25-year-old, who plays for Leicester at club level, highlighted the team's 2-1 semi-final triumph against Commonwealth and Olympic champions Australia.

"We were really pleased with our performance against Australia," Jennie said. "That was our best game of the tournament.

"I think I improved with each game and playing in front of your home crowd is great."

But silver was so nearly gold for Jennie and the team as the final was marred by controversy with the manner of India's gold medal victory sparking protests lasting an hour after the game's conclusion.

The winning goal was scored after the final whistle had been blown at the end of the first period of golden goal extra time.

India had a penalty corner but the stadium hooter sounded as the ball was stopped on the edge of the 'D'.

The ball was promptly struck into the net as the referee blew the final whistle after hearing the hooter.

Appeals and counter appeals were made by both teams but the decision was upheld.

England Ladies played six times at the Games, recording 6-1 victories over Canada and Scotland in the process.
