A WORCESTER motorcyclist is closing in on a prestigious national championship in a new form of the sport.

Martin Robbins has moved this season from motocross to super moto racing, in which riders race on circuits that are part tarmac and part dirt.

And he's taken to it so well that he leads the national Super Moto Series after six rounds.

Despite not recording any victories, he's finished consistently well including two second places, one of which was at the last round near Cockermouth, Cumbria to take him 30 points clear of his nearest rival.

He said: "Everybody is amazed that I am doing so well in something I have never done before. I just have to finish in the top five for the rest of the season now and that will be enough."

Martin's 400cc KTM four-stroke bike differs from a normal motocross bike in that it has bigger wheels and brakes and fatter tyres.

"Speeds can reach anything up to 100mph."

The 38-year-old, who has been motorcycling for 15 years with a spell in BMX racing, is seeking additional sponsorship to help him compete in the series, which continues with a round at Llandow, south Wales, on August 11.
