THE first ever Three Choirs Fringe dragon boat race ended in defeat for the host city of Worcester.
Three dragon boats from the Milo Dragon Boat Club represented each of the cities of the Three Choirs, Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester.
In this first race on the River Severn, from Diglis Hotel to Sabrina Bridge, the deans of the three cities' Cathedrals were on board to beat the rhythm for the rowers.
Gloucester led most of the way but, in the last few yards, it looked as though Worcester were going to catch them.
After checking with the judges, city council arts officer Steve Quick announced that Gloucester had held on to win, with Hereford finishing last.
Dignitaries from the three cities, including the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Robert Rowden, turned out on Saturday afternoon to watch the race along with the crowds of locals.
