RICHARD Chamings of the UK Independence Party says (You Say, Wednesday, August 14) that Norway and Switzerland "happen coincidentally to be the two countries with the highest incomes per capita anywhere in the world."
He provides us with this statistic without stating his source of information. The World Bank is responsible for providing statistics to economists throughout the world.
That august organisation provides a table on its website (www.worldbank.org) listing the nations' gross national incomes per capita for 2000.
Neither Norway nor Switzerland tops the list. Norway is sixth (US$34530) and Switzerland third (US$38140).
The top of the list is Luxembourg (US$42060) which of course is one of the founding nations of the EC.
It would be nice if Mr Chamings were to supply the source for his statistics.
