KENYAN students are being targeted by University College Worcester as potential undergraduates.

The St John's college has appointed a marketing officer to promote its courses across Kenya and the rest of east Africa.

And if students take up the challenge of learning in the city, they will make the campus more of a multi-cultural experience.

The college already has a good record of attracting students from across Scandinavia and China.

Peter Koome has been appointed as the UCW agent based in Nairobi.

He has just returned to his Kenyan home following a familiarisation trip to the city to see the campus for himself and to meet key personnel at UCW.

"I am very honoured to have been appointed as the representative of University College Worcester in my country," said Mr Koome.

"I'm looking forward to being able to market the university college and the courses available here in Kenya, and to building a long and mutually fruitful relationship with UCW in the years ahead."

UCW has put increasing resources into its international marketing effort in recent months and this appointment is another step towards the broadening and diversification of the student population in the city.

Following its previous success, it has identified a need for higher education opportunities for students in Kenya.

The education system in the country is very similar to that in the UK and students from that country can easily move into higher education here in Britain.

Mr Koome will be promoting UCW through attendance at education fairs and working through the British Council offices in Nairobi.

"We look forward to welcoming our first students from Kenya," said Pam Stubbs, head of marketing at UCW.

"A new opportunity such as this opens up more exchange opportunities for our students and will enrich the life of the student population here at UCW.

"This is an important step for us."
