WOUNDED England fan Phil Holland is back home in Worcester after being shot in Bratislava, the Slovakian capital.

Mr Holland, a 30-year-old tiler from Warndon, was shot in the leg after security guards opened fire in a bar crammed with football supporters.

His identity emerged in the early hours of yesterday following England's 2-1 win in Saturday's European Championships 2004 qualifier.

Mr Holland had been drinking with friends in a pub in the main square just after midnight on Friday when gunfire rang out.

Security guards had opened fire when a group of fans refused to leave a nearby bar, police said.

"We were walking towards a nightclub when we heard some shots being fired," said Spurs fan Mr Holland, of Rodborough Close. "At first they seemed to be firing into the air. We all moved away from the noise but then I suddenly realised I'd been shot in the leg."

Gareth Jones, also 30, a Coventry van driver, was shot in the neck . He condition was said to be "stable".

Both men staggered to the doorway of the luxury Carlton Radisson Hotel, where some of the England players and FA officials were staying.

They took refuge while an ambulance was called. Paramedics battled to stem the blood flowing from Mr Jones' neck as England fans barracked security staff and police for not doing more to protect them.

As a tired Mr Holland stepped off the plane at Stansted yesterday afternoon, he was taken straight to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for a check-up.

By 9.30pm, he was back at home with relieved wife Angie.

"It's great to be back," he said. "Being in hospital over there wasn't too bad, but I didn't know what they were saying. "I'm not sure how my leg is going to heal yet - I've just got to play it by ear."

He said his ordeal might force him to think twice about attending football matches in future.

"I don't know what I'm going to do yet, if I'll watch England again," he revealed.
