AN elderly woman was killed when the car in which she was a passenger spun out of control on a bend and somersaulted along the road.
The 88-year-old was one of two people in a maroon Ford Escort, which was in collision with a second car as it careered across the Worcester Road, near Evesham, yesterday.
"The car failed to negotiate a right-hand bend between The Squires and Chadbury junctions and mounted the nearside grass verge," said a police spokesman.
"It collided with a static road sign and bushes before rebounding back on to the carriageway and overturning several times."
The Escort was also in collision with a red Peugeot 406 estate, travelling in the opposite direction.
Emergency services were alerted at 1.22pm when a passer-by discovered the Peugeot in a ditch and the Escort on its roof.
A spokesman for the Ambulance Service said three ambulances, a paramedic and the Air Ambulance were scrambled to the crash scene.
The elderly woman, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to the mortuary at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
An off-duty nurse, who spotted the accident, drove two people with minor injuries to Evesham Community Hospital.
A further two people, who were more seriously hurt, were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance.
Their injuries were not known as the Evening News went to press today.
Police sealed the road off between Wyre Piddle and Chadbury End for three-and-a-half hours as the emergency services cleared the wreckage.
West Mercia police's crash investigation unit has already launched a probe.
"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this crash to contact me," said PC Les Pegler.
"This is a tragic collision whereby a woman has lost her life and I am keen to speak to anyone who has information about it."
