CHEERFUL chairman Betty Long greeted members and guests to the September luncheon meeting and hoped that everyone had enjoyed their summer holiday - she confessed that she would not be at the October meeting since she would be sunning herself on Lake Garda! However, down to business.
Jan Young regretfully gave her resignation, due to family commitments. Vice chairman Brenda Graham will take over as luncheon secretary and ladies wishing to book themselves in for the October meeting have been requested to phone Brenda on 01527 874463.
Having enjoyed a lovely two course meal at the Ladybird Inn, the ladies settled down to listen to the speaker, Mrs Notburga Cheetham-Tilt, Austrian by birth, who came to England to live some years after World War II ended.
She spoke - and we listened - absolutely in horror as she told us of the harrowing details of the Nazi occupation of Austria during the late 1930's. Of her 80-year-old grandmother being beaten in prison and of her own experience of persecution and brutality at the hands of the Nazis. At times she was close to tears as she recounted her early teenage life. This was truly "man's inhumanity to man".
The chairman gave the vote of thanks and reminded members that the next meeting is tomorrow (Thursday).
