WORCESTER taxi drivers who fear new late night bus services will threaten their livelihood packed out the public gallery at the Guildhall last night.
After protesting outside before the meeting, chairman of the Worcester City Taxi Drivers Association, Ziafat Hussain, addressed members of the licensing committee about their concerns.
"The late night bus services will kill off the taxi trade altogether," he said.
"I am sure you are aware of the feelings of the taxi profession - you can see from the numbers that have come here tonight.
"There are strong feelings against these buses. I hope you will consider your decision and take into account what these people have come for tonight."
Committee chairman, Coun David Clark, said Worcestershire County Council had made the decision.
But he said he was sympathetic to their views and he assured the drivers that officers would be writing a report that would include their feelings on the issue.
"We will do whatever we can to look after your interests," he said.
Two bus routes will be operating in a circular loop connecting the city centre to Dines Green and Warndon, from 11.45pm to 3.45am, for a six-month trial period, starting on Friday, December 6.
