RAMBLERS: Evesham Rambling Club met at Dorstone village green in Herefordshire for the September Ramble.
After the initial greeting our leader warned us of the likelihood of severely blocked paths, and to take care going past the church in case it fell down! The church had been built in the twelfth century by Thomas De Britto in atonement for his part in murdering Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. After passing through the churchyard, we crossed the track of the old Golden Valley railway running from Hereford to Brecon, which closed in 1950.It was worth the climb to Arthur's Stone, the only significant Neolithic burial place in the county. We continued up Merbach Common to a trig point at the top to enjoy wonderful views of Hay Bluff, the Brecon Beacons, and the meandering river Wye. We battled through what seemed like miles of walls of brambles along a forgotten track. It was a relief to be in the open again and to return to that idyllic village green for a picnic lunch.
The afternoon walk took us through some woods and across yet more breathtakingly beautiful Herefordshire countryside to return to a wonderful tea prepared by Mike and Val Taylor. The contact number for ERC is 01386 553661.
CSRF: Thirty two members attended a lively meeting at Evesham Library when members wishing to join the Christmas lunch at the Round of Gras on December 10 were able to choose their menu and pay for the meal. Other members wishing to join us will be able to book at the bring and buy morning on November 12 to be held as usual at Evesham Library. Thanks to Mrs June Green for her organisation of the lunch.
The chairman introduced this month's speaker, Mr Nicholas Clarke whose illustrated talk 'Travel around Texas' was absorbing and greatly enjoyed by everyone.
