GOLF: An assistant greenkeeper is hoping to top the leaderboard at the West Midlands finals of the Daily Telegraph Wilson Matchplay Championships.
Pete Williams, of Shatterford, will be chasing the prize of a five-day national final in Portugal at Sandwell Park Golf Club on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old swapped the tools at his Bromsgrove workplace for his golf clubs to progress through four qualifying rounds.
Williams, who plays off a six handicap, is now just 18 holes away from qualifying out of an original field of 6,000 entrants.
With advice and guidance from Redditch caddie Liz Newton, Williams needs a top-five finish to book his ticket to the Algarve in January.
He is optimistic about his chances of making the sun at the Vale do Lobo course and joked he is following Nick Faldo's example in hiring a female caddie.
Williams added Newton has proved invaluable with advice on club selection and reading the greens.
