HOCKEY: Imran Yousaf put Stourport ahead after just two minutes in National League Division One at Southgate but the visitors wound up losing 2-1.
It was one of Stourport's toughest fixtures for years against the former European champions who they last met when going for the national title.
Training had been positive in midweek with Yousaf bringing the benefit of his international career to highlight possible changes.
Relegated Southgate boasted international experience but Yousaf converted an early short-corner in the opening minute.
Stourport dominated much of the first half and took the lead into the break but were under pressure from the restart.
Southgate, who had drawn on their senior players, equalised on 48 minutes through Gareth Andrew.
Though clear chances were few, ex-England cap Adrian Simons fired the winner with five minutes left.
Barford Tigers 2 Stourport 2nds 2
Stourport adapted well on a bad surface and took the lead just before the break when Mark Moss and Steve Ellis combined for Nick Chambers to score.
Dominant Stourport added another when Phil Baldwin finished off a five-man passing move and the game appeared to be over.
But revived Barford pulled one back from a deflected short-corner which led to Dan Packwood being sent off for dissent. With five minutes left, the equaliser arrived from a right-wing cross.
Stourport 3rds 7 Harbourne 1
David Knott hammered six goals, with the first of three first-half short-corner strikes on two minutes.
Harborne pulled a goal back before the break but Knott responded with a solo effort and later dribbled in two more short-corners.
Ian Roberts and Mike Taylor dominated midfield, while Danny Baldwin saved a penalty.
Mike Shaw scored the seventh goal, completing a right-wing move with a quality finish.
Beeston 0 Stourport 4ths 0
Stourport struggled to field a fit team but relied on the experienced Godfrey Lamb and John Shackleton at the back.
Stourport 5ths 5 Olton & West Warwicks 4ths 3
Hat-trick hero Dave Bedford put Stourport ahead with a tap-in but Olton replied with three goals.
Luke Carless kept the score down and Bedford netted his second before equalising in the second half with a smart shot.
Robin Conway secured the points with two goals, following good work from Gareth Pritchard and a penalty.
Old Silhillians 4ths 0 Stourport 6ths 1
Ben Everitt-Li's early strike was decisive and team spirit shone through from a young team.
West Warwick 2 Stourport Veterans 6
The veterans progressed in the National Over-40s Cup, storming ahead through Conway and two from Knott who also hit the bar with a penalty.
Their opponents struck back against the run of play but Andy Watson restored the lead from a short-corner and Conway made it 5-1.
Sub Roy Woster's mazy dribbling set up a sixth for Bedford before a late consolation goal.
Walsall 0 Stourport White Badgers 1
A last-minute goal from Andrew Kimberlin was enough to give the Badgers victory.
James Powell, Andrew Cavendish and keeper David Lewis were the pick of an excellent display.
Stourport Blue Badgers 2 Redditch 1
All three goals were scored in the last 15 minutes of the match with Stourport on the mark through William Terry and Oliver Butler.
Emily McCoy and Eton Szytbl made fine debuts, while Dan Hurley and Max Totney look promising.
Fixture, Sunday: Stourport 1sts v Bournville (1.30pm).
