AS someone who has taken part in some of the productions at the Swan Theatre as an amateur, as well as enjoying the high quality of those provided by the resident and other visiting companies, I should like to express my concern at the proposed withdrawal of funding by our Conservative Council.
With all its limitations over the years, the theatre has remained an oasis of culture in the city that will be sorely missed. One of my own joys was taking my five-year-old grandchild to the Swan for a Saturday morning children's show.
As a performer in some of those shows, I remember the excitement. Destroying the theatre in this way will be an act of political vandalism. It will show what Conservatives really stand for.

THE Swan Theatre has had its day. To sustain it further would only be throwing good money after bad.
