WORCESTER City Council is proposing to reduce its annual grant to the Swan Theatre from £137,000 to £54,000. This will make it quite impossible for the Swan to continue and so sound the death knell for one of the best little theatres in the Midlands.
It makes one want to weep when one remembers the heroic efforts made in the 1960s to build the theatre, the excitement it engendered, and the boost it gave to the stature of the city as a centre of culture.
Whoever heard of a self-respecting city with a cathedral, a university, a concert hall and no theatre?
We urge as many people as possible to write to the Leader of the Council, Coun Stephen Inman, asking the council to support and not to destroy the Swan Theatre.
J D and M A W GARRAD,
Claines, Worcester.
