UPTON travelled up the motorway to Fiveways' Hopwood ground to find a well-manicured, lush, green pitch, which took a stud, unlike the rock hard pitches of previous weeks.
FIVEWAYS 5pts, UPTON 43pts
Upton welcomed back Jerry Wheeler and Mark Tether from illness.
Like last week, Upton took the lead within three minutes of the start when hooker, Paul Pickering took a strike in the scrum against the head on half way. Tim Badger fed Tether who went on the blind side and after a dazzling run was stopped only metres short of the line. From the ensuing ruck, a Fiveways forward strayed offside so setting up a penalty option for Upton and Oliver Jones strode through virtually unopposed to score near the posts, so giving captain, Rob Heeley, an easy conversion kick to take the score to 7-0.
Fiveways have always been known for their big set of forwards and for the next 15 minutes they tested Upton's defence. Upton stood firm with good understanding between the forwards and backs.
After 20 minutes, Upton worked the ball back up field in a movement involving many hands and this resulted in full back Heeley coming in at speed, touching down and then converting a kick under the posts for 14-0.
Before half time Upton scored two more tries through prop Mel Hill and lock Jerry Wheeler, following good close support work amongst the pack. Rob Heeley converted both tries. Upton were now in complete control at 28-0.
The second half saw Upton staying in the Fiveways section for lengthy periods with good driving plays from their back row of Nick Bennett, Adam Heath and Oliver Jones before bringing the backs into play. This pressure finally told on Fiveways as Heeley kicked a penalty and then further tries came from Jones, from a forward drive following a lineout, and then winger Tim Dodge scoring his maiden try for the club since joining from Chaddesley. Heeley converted Dodge's try from wide out giving a score of 43-0.
With minutes left Upton sat back and Fiveways piled on the pressure winger Adams scored an unconverted try in the corner.
Upton move up to fourth place in the league and for their next league game travel to leaders Solihull on October 26.
