REGARDING the proposal to demolish Christopher Whitehead School and replace it with a Tesco supermarket, it is to be hoped that when this scheme comes before the city council's planning committee, and ultimately the full council, that those councillors who are members of both the city and county councils will declare an interest.
This matter should be decided on whether the Tesco supermarket is of an appropriate scale and in a suitable location with reference to St John's, and in my view it is neither.
It is much too big, aimed solely at customers shopping by car, and too far from the centre of St John's for those reliant on public transport - particularly those living on or north of Bromyard Road.
The Sainsbury's scheme, linked to the present shopping provision in St John's, would provide an alternative to the Co-op, and is close to the commercial centre.
While there would undoubtedly be some increase in traffic volumes, this will be much less than that associated with that which would arise should the Tesco scheme be approved and the school relocated away from the heart of the community.
The future of St John's is too important for short-term financial considerations to prevail and the decision should not be hijacked by pressure from the county council and the carrot being dangled by Tesco.
