A COMPLETE performance of the Nelson Mass by Haydn is to take place in Hereford Cathedral tomorrow morning.
The liturgical performance, due to start at 10.30am, is to mark the retirement of the precentor, Paul Iles.
"The unique performance will feature an orchestra of local professional musicians and the Cathedral choir as part of the normal Sunday morning Eucharist service," said Geraint Bowen, Hereford Cathedral organist and choirmaster.
"The choir has been learning the Mass, which they have never sung before, in readiness for the service."
Mr Bowen said, usually, a Mass such as the Nelson would be performed only as a musical event.
"This rare performance will be in the setting it was composed for, the music to accompany or illustrate the church service.
"The Nelson Mass is really loved by concert-goers but this will be something very special, unique for this one service."
Jooseph Haydn, together with Mozart and Beethoven, was one of the three great composers of the Classical Era's Viennese School.
Canon Paul Iles has been at Hereford Cathedral for almost 20 years and is both an accomplished musician and composer.
Following the service, there will be a presentation to Canon Iles, who has a music degree from Cambridge university and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists.
"This is an opportunity for the music staff to say goodbye to someone who has been a friend and a strong supporter of music at Hereford Cathedral," added Mr Bowen.
