I HAVE never read such an example of utter tripe as contained in the letter from County Councillor Tom Wareing in his denunciation of Secular Humanism, (You Say, October 10).
Humanists do not "discredit the family", "break down cultural standards" or wish to suppress religious expression for those that seek comfort in their calling. Nor are humanists guilty of any of the other farcical allegation made Mr Wareing.
On the contrary, Secular Humanism can be an immense force for good in the world, striving for openness, justice and freedom for all in the world community.
Humanism also provides a very sound foundation for morality that is second to none, deploring all kinds of prejudice and violence, whether of the grounds of creed, race, gender or sexuality.
More especially, Humanists campaign passionately to rid society of the kinds of bigotry and intolerance as displayed so proficiently by Mr Wareing towards those of other faiths and life-stances that he doesn't see eye-to-eye with.
Ok, so humanists don't believe in a God who rules the universe. Is that really such a heinous crime? I have many Christian friends who will vouch for my "fully intact" spirituality and who would be appalled at Mr Wareing's brand of unfeeling and uncharitable theism.
Get real councillor, come and meet some humanists. You will find they are nothing like as frightening as you imagine.
I remain proud to live by the standards I set myself and always to embrace the very high principles of secular humanism.
GERRY KING, Crowle.
