A BABY ended up with a bump on the head and a bruised toe after a buggy bought from a Worcester store collapsed while he was in it, his angry mum claims.

Vanessa Champken's problems started six months ago when she bought a £100 pushchair from Mothercare.

The 24-year-old said the buggy lasted three weeks before its lifting mechanism collapsed.

She contacted Mothercare to detail the problem during the next two months after it broke twice.

The mum claims she was told by the store in Worcester's CrownGate Centre that she would not get a replacement or refund because it was just "general wear and tear" and not a manufacturer's fault.

Her parents then paid for a new model, which she believes is now worse than the first.

"My mum was pushing the latest pram down a kerb when the folding mechanism suddenly collapsed on Thomas," said Mrs Champken, of Drakes Avenue, Dines Green.

"My son bumped his head and bruised his toe. We've only had this pram for six months and I can't believe its gone wrong."

She sent the buggy back to Mothercare for repair and was given a spare buggy to use for the week.

Mrs Champken said the "fixed" pram came back with its bent arm repaired, but the folding mechanism was still loose and it was also "looking lop sided". She has paperwork to support her claims about the faults that have been reported.

"I don't like complaining but it has never been fixed right," said Mrs Champken.

"I think a pram should be able to last more than six months - I can't afford to keep spending £100 a time."

Lynda Bomyer, head of Mothercare's customer relations department, said the company did not want to "mess this customer about any more".

"If she can go back into the store she will be happily given an exchange or a refund," she said.
