DISABLED and wheelchair-bound people living in Worcester are enjoying a lift thanks to the latest addition to a city community transport scheme.

Trustees, staff and volunteers at Worcester Community Transport officially received the specially adapted bus, which will be used to transport elderly and disabled people around the city.

The converted Peugeot Expert, which has been added to the charity's fleet of mini-buses, was provided through the Urban Bus Challenge, which aims to improve community transport facilities within Worcestershire.

Sally Ellison, manager of Worcester City Volunteer Bureau, said she was delighted with the vehicle, which she added would be a great help to disabled and elderly people. However, she also appealed for more volunteer drivers so the vehicle could benefit as many people as possible.

"This is an exciting new venture for us," she said. "We are convinced this vehicle will be a much appreciated addition to our fleet and increase our capacity to assist elderly and disabled people within the city.

"However, we need to recruit more volunteers to drive this vehicle, enabling it to reach its full potential."

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should phone Hedley Burton or Mrs Ellison on 01905 24741 or call into 33 The Tything, Worcester.
