JOHN Barton believes striker Mark Owen is starting to see light at the end of the tunnel following his return from serious injury.
The Worcester City striker scored in the club's 2-0 victory against Cambridge City at St George's Lane for his first league goal since breaking his leg more than 12 months ago.
City boss Barton was pleased with both Owen's goal and performance on Saturday which helped fire Worcester back to the top of the Dr Martens Premier Division.
"I thought Mark's performance was strong, he looked a little more lively and was more productive than he has been," said Barton.
"He's taken another step in the right direction in terms of his display but it is still a long haul ahead.
"People don't really understand what it is like coming back from serious injury unless they have been through it. It can be a long, dark tunnel but I would like to think Saturday was a boost to him."
Barton also praised 19-year-old defender Dan Jones, who was making his full debut, but admitted he was still searching for a full 90 minute performance from his side.
"I wasn't frightened about putting Dan in and he seems to have an experienced head on young shoulders," added Barton.
"It's always nice to get off to a good start on your debut and he came out of defensive situations not only comfortable in possession but was productive as well.
"In the circumstances it was a good result for the team and the first half performance was particularly pleasing.
"However, we are still looking for the elusive 90 minute display.
"The early goal settled us down and as I said the first 45 minutes were very encouraging."
Barton revealed David Foy was due to have knee surgery a week today after a specialist diagnosed cartilage damage last week.
"I can understand people wondering why we didn't get this sorted out earlier, but the reality is that we haven't got the facilities of full time clubs," he said.
"That is not a criticism of the club but the reality of non-league football, plus of course during the time David's been out his knee was improving and making progress."
