WITH British wintertime about to begin next week, West Mercia police are warning the public to be vigilant and protect their homes against the possibility of burglaries during the short days and long nights ahead.
In two burglaries out of every 10 the thief does not have to force their way in because a door or window has been left open.
"Burglars like easy opportunities," a West Mercia police spokesman said. "They don't like locked windows because breaking glass attracts attention.
"They don't like deadlocks on doors because they can't open them, even from the inside and they have to get out through a window."
He added that taking simple precautions makes a difference and we should check the security of our homes.
With all strangers we should be alert to people loitering in residential streets. If it is no one you recognise, call the police.
Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice.
A high wall or fence at the rear of a house can put off a burglar.
Check for weak spots where a thief could get in. A thorny hedge can be a deterrent.
Time switches should be used, if you are away from home.
They are available from DIY shops to turn radios and other appliances on when you are out. This will make the house look as if it is occupied.
Valuables should never be on show through a window and the type of goods thieves like, such as televisions, videos, home computers, cameras and jewellery should be marked with a postcode and the number of your house or flat.
An inexpensive kit is available from most DIY stores.
