THREE shrubs were planted round a sign bearing the name of Hanley Castle as a lasting memorial to its victory in Worcestershire's Best Kept Village of the Year competition.
Bob Dale, chairman of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England, and Suzanne Owen, chairman of the Worcestershire Federation of Women's Institutes, carried out the ceremony on behalf of the organisations backing the competition.
This took place last Saturday (October 19), at the junction of Church End and the B4211 Upton road.
Parish council chairman Sue Roberts said local people had been surprised but delighted to win the category for villages with less than 300 residents, in the British Gas-sponsored competition.
Miss Roberts said Mr Dale, one of the judges, had expressed his gratitude for the fact that the competition had given him the opportunity to get to know the village better.
