AS local representative on Herefordshire Council I support the campaign for improved safety through Ashperton. What is needed is a reduced speed limit, traffic calming and a much improved pavement through the village as part of the Safer Routes to School initiative.
Ian Newberry (Your Letters, October 18) points to the governing criteria based on accident records and Alan Maude (Your Letters, October 18) to the better provision in adjoining counties.
I have long argued that Herefordshire should emulate Worcestershire's excellent example where every village has a safety scheme.
Herefordshire's current practice of giving priority to those villages with a bad accident record is reactive and patchy. We need a safety programme, which is pro-active, preventative and countywide.
COUN GUY WOODFORD, Acton Beauchamp.
