A MAN who broke into a Malvern shop was caught by an off-duty policeman drinking in a nearby pub.
Sgt Andy Woolhouse was in the Anchor Inn, Yates Hay Road, when he heard the burglar alarm go off at the Londis shop on May 7 last year, Worcester magistrates heard.
The alarm was triggered by Simon Bailey, aged 25, who had broken in through the roof.
Sgt Woolhouse went to investigate and saw the shop's internal ceiling damaged and a CCTV camera lying on the floor.
"He called the police and then saw a man in a garden to the left of the premises," said prosecutor Stephen Davis. "He shouted to him to stand still, but he ran away."
Sgt Woolhouse flagged down the police when they arrived and explained the circumstances, before spotting Bailey in nearby Wilmot Road. He chased and caught him. Sgt Woolhouse later received a bravery commendation.
Bailey, of the Tything, Worcester, admitted being in an enclosed area for an unlawful purpose and causing criminal damage. The cost of repairs, including a new ceiling and CCTV system, was put at £8,354.
Louise Hooker, for Bailey, said he had been going through a tough time with his partner when he broke into the shop. He was also treated for depression at a hospital in Worcester.
"He has left his criminal life behind him," she said.
Magistrates gave Bailey an 18-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £500 compensation and £55 costs.
Londis store owner Derek Cooke said the prompt action of Sgt Woolhouse was "absolutely brilliant"
"He decided to do his job even though he wasn't on duty and that's a credit to him," he said.
